It is my great honor to introduce you to Ripley (Believe It or Not), as my Valentine’s joy for you all!

Hi, my name is Ripley (Believe It or Not). But I am also called Rip, the Ripster, Ripples, knucklehead and couch potato. Just don’t call me late for dinner, ha ha, that’s a puppy joke!

I have lived with Dale (a type 1) and Ted (he came close to a diagnosis of type 2 but through lots of walks with e and diet, he dodged that label) since they rescued me from a crack house in Long Beach at 6 weeks of age. I also snuggle with Anni (the kitty that Dale calls the “small headed, squishy, sleepy kitty who LOVES Ripley!) all the time!  (More on Anni another time)

I am known for my good looks but apparently, I am not long on IQ, whatever that is. Once though, when she had a painful surgery, I joined her in bed and rested my chin on her left side which happened to be where the pain was. She said I had a high EQ (apparently that’s emotional intelligence quotient).

On another occasion when she and I got to the park I saw my friend Lola, a Great Dane, standing over her master Don who was on the ground. I threw my head back and howled. Turns out Don had been knocked down and was injured. I knew it! I am proud to have some kind of “telligence”.

I also know that they love me and I love them unconditionally which is what I was put on this earth to do. They may be type 1 and type 2, but I know for sure they are my type, ha ha, another puppy joke.

Enthusiastically … Ripley (Believe It or Not)

Dogs ‘prefer reggae and soft rock’ to other music genres, research suggests, as reported on the BBC.com, 26 January 2017.

The Scottish SPCA and the University of Glasgow have published a paper which suggests music affects dogs’ behavior.  Researchers played a variety of music to dogs at a rehoming center in Dumbarton and assessed physiological and behavioral changes.  Prof Neil Evans said the most positive behavior changes were seen when the dogs were played reggae and soft rock.

All though these genres stood out, he said the study suggested each dog had its own music tastes.  Prof Evans said: “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed highlighting the possibility that like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences.”

The study suggested that dogs spent “significantly more time lying and significantly less time standing” when music was played, regardless of genre.  By measuring the dogs’ heart rate, researchers said they showed a decrease in stress levels when played music – particularly when it was soft rock or reggae.

What about cats, you ask?A cellist for the National Symphony Orchestra, David Teie, has also studied what sounds cats prefer and composed music they found “soothing”.  More on this when we post a cat post!  Stay tuned!
